The vile use of tragedy

A study by Quaest indicated that 31% of Brazilians said they received fake news about the tragedy in Rio Grande do Sul. It is hard to tell how many of the remaining 69% were also the target of fake news, but did not identify them as such. A survey by the Laboratory of Internet and Social Media Studies at the Rio de Janeiro Federal University revealed the major types of deliberately falsified content and found that seeking political gain is one of the main motivators for spreading it. The School of Digital Communication at FGV Rio found that discussions related to disinformation among users in social media platforms and messaging apps surpassed even content related to the tragedy and solidarity towards the victims.
