The Algerian boxer Imane Khelif won against the Italian Angela Carini, who withdrew from the match after 46 seconds due to severe pain in the nose, in a match fought on August 1 in the Paris Olympics. The outcome of the fight began a wave of disinformation and hate speech on social media, instigated by the far right. Several publications claimed that Khelif is a transgender woman – which is false, as shown by Lupa’s fact-checking report.
Data obtained from CrowdTangle – a monitoring tool that enables the study of the flow of information circulating on social media – indicates a peak of publications with the term “trans” on Facebook and Instagram on August 1, 2024. On that date, at least 1,010 posts and 444,193 interactions were registered in the monitored groups and profiles.
