Precarious and platform-based work, the identities circulating on social media, and the concrete challenges of practices and legislation.
Precarization of labor is the theme of the 4th debate cycle of the Media and Democracy Council.
The precarization of labor was the theme of the 4th debate cycle of the Media and Democracy Council, held through three meetings: an alignment meeting, a preparatory meeting, and a plenary session. Experts from different areas participated with the objective of discussing the topic. These included council member Daniele Barbosa, author of the book "Trabalhadores de Apps em Cena," who led the workshop; Rafael Grohmann, Professor of critical platform and data studies at the University of Toronto, who conducted the preparatory meeting; and finally, the plenary meeting featured Marcelo D'Ambroso, a Labor Judge at TRT4, focused on the impacts of digital platforms on the world of work and the judiciary's role in ensuring human rights.
Among the topics discussed in the meetings, key points included the platformization of workers, the issue of informality and the lack of political presence in this context, which creates the false idea that workers themselves determine their own failure or success, resulting in the normalization of precarization. The right-wing's dissemination of the idea of politically induced precariousness was also addressed. When considering platforms like Uber and iFood, the impact of technology and artificial intelligence in this scenario was also highlighted.
From this perspective, it was concluded that the focus should not only be on developing specific regulations but also on creating permanent public policies that listen to workers and associations that guarantee these rights. The internet eliminates social protection and promotes greater exclusion; therefore, public recommendations regarding the digital environment are necessary. Finally, the profile of these workers was outlined, with the majority of remote and informal workers being women.
